When I took this position I thought that I would be helping create new charms, testing out existing ones, doing experiments. Not being called in on a Saturday and doing reversals all day.

It started easy enough. Was called in around noon because a beagle had been charmed to breathe fire. Ok, maybe not that easy. By the time I got there, Gil had been burned and Kathleen was trying to keep the pup from escaping.

( I was able to help catch him and worked on the poor thing... )

I take off my work robes and put them into my locker. It's almost one and I'm suppose to meet Colin for lunch. To be honest I am a bit nervous. I haven't seen him since the end of June and except for the few owls we exchanged this week, we really haven't talked.

"Be back after lunch," I tell Kathleen as I walk by. She looks up and nods before turning her attention back to her paperwork. Gil has already gone and I've discovered that Kathleen hardly leaves her office. She's very dedicated and nice. I couldn't ask for a better boss.

( I make my way to the lifts. )

I do my hair in a French twist and look at my appearance. I look a little older than almost nineteen, which is good in this case. No need to look like I am fresh out of Hogwarts on my first day.

Taking a deep breath, I Apparate into the Atrium’s Apparation Point within the Ministry. There’s a flurry of activity as other witches and wizards make their way to the lifts and to work.

( I follow the other commuters and step into one of the waiting lifts. )

I’m back in England.

That sounds so strange. After I left after Hogwarts, I wasn’t sure if I would ever move back here again. At least not this soon. If it hadn’t been the job offer from the Ministry of Magic, I would still be in France. With Devlin. One minute you are at University in France, the next you are back in England working for the Ministry.

( Of course I know all too well how suddenly life can change. )

I don’t know why I’m spending any time putting effort into getting ready. It’s not like I’m going to meet my husband or boyfriend. I’m really just going so people don’t spend a lot of time asking me why I’m not going. I’ve been feeling especially down since the last time I went patrolling with Devlin. Things have been a little awkward.

“Vicky! Vicky!” I turn around in the hall to try and spot who was calling me. I see Grace running up to me and shift my books in my arms to try and balance the weight. “I’m so glad I caught you,” she says when she finally gets to me. I stomp out of Professor Fudge’s office, wishing there was someone else nearby to hex. I swear, that man thinks he’s special just because his uncle was Minister of Magic. He seems to be able to conveniently forget that his uncle was complete rubbish at the job, and could be blamed for the war getting as out of control as it did. It seems like ignorance runs in the family.

It’s getting dark outside. I’m the only one on the pitch, but I keep flying laps and doing drills. I can’t believe I wasted so many years not playing Quidditch. I’ve always loved to fly, and I’m a good Keeper, if I do say so myself. But Mum always encouraged me to try as many things as possible to find what I love, and Quidditch never fit in before now.
